Welcome to The Basics! These five pages will show you the fundamental techniques to wield finger floggers with both substance and style:
- Getting Started
- Practice Goals
- One-Handed Drills
- Two-Handed Drills
- Florentine Weaves
Got all your one-handed drills and two-handed drills down?
Are you sure?
Okay! Now you’re ready for weaves, or what you probably know of as Florentine. These can be broken down into two-beat weaves (also called four-point Florentine), where the same hand is always above the other, and three-beat weaves (also called six-point Florentine), where the two hands alternate being above or below each other.
The videos below give you a snapshot of all the different weaves: two-beat and three-beat, forward and reverse. If you’re the self-study type, you can use YouTube’s playback settings to slow the videos down, and then pick apart the mechanics on your own.
If you need a bit more guidance, here’s a full tutorial that walks you from the very basics to the three-beat. If you want to learn reverse Florentine (striking upwards with your floggers), I have a full tutorial on that, too.
And of course, if you want personalized help, here’s some information on setting up a private lesson with me. Or you can follow us on Instagram to find out when I’ll be teaching a workshop.
Two-Beat Weaves
1. Two-beat weave, forward direction, left-hand above.
2. Two-beat weave, forward direction, right-hand above (with side view).
3. Two-beat weave, reverse direction, left-hand above.
4. Two-beat weave, reverse direction, right-hand above.
Three-Beat Weaves
5. Three-beat weave, forward direction (with side view).
6. Three-beat weave, reverse direction (with side view).
Note that this is a very exhaustive list of basic exercises. I am of the belief that if you want to flog cleanly and safely, you need to be able to do all of these. But, I also get that some of the moves may not be of interest to you right now, so it’s ultimately on you if you want to pick and choose which exercises to focus on.
Beyond Florentine
Once you have your basic Florentine down and are ready to tackle more advanced moves, check out the next section of this site. It’s self-explanatorily titled “More Tips & Tutorials,” and it’s basically where I post whatever updates and information that I believe people will find useful. Happy flogging!
